The Agony and the Ecstasy of Downsizing
Posted: February 12, 2022
I know I must let go of stuff, let go of who I once was and the pursuits I once fought for, but…
Like so many Boomers, we are encountering what it means to downsize, or as some call it, “right-size.” We find the whole process unearths deep feelings, longings, regrets, memories, and usually, a few arguments. It is no simple matter to trim down thenumber of our material goods. And sometimes, it is just plain excruciatingly hard to let go.
A few weeks ago, we moved to a much smaller home. It is a perfect size–at least for this new condensed version of us. Downsizing is critical and practical; we simply do not have the space to store so many piles or files.
Now, before you send a team of therapists to extract me from my two-drawer filing cabinet and boxes marked “memorabilia,” please understand the arguments that filled my anguishing heart–both then and now as I continue the “purge.” I am experiencing one of life’s bewildering yet enlightening paradoxes: I know I must let go of stuff, let go of who I once was and the pursuits I once fought for–while at the same time, I am even more aware of the new calling in my life. I’m propelled forward to new possibilities—a fresh calling built upon the foundation of my past successes and failures. A new beginning encompasses my well-worn personality, honed skills, persistent passions, and emboldened strengths. I am embarking upon my Third Calling while encouraging others to follow theirs.
As you consider moving forward in this season of life, are you ready to downsize your possessions, burdens, and obligations? Are you ready to physically and emotionally “right-size?” Perhaps now is the time to focus on what priorities and purposes you will enthusiastically pursue in a new season of life!
We invite you to come along with us on this journey. We have developed resources to encourage and guide you, including our books, Third Calling: What are you doing the rest of your life?, and My Life After Work. You can also engage in an entire re-focusing process through our online courses at Re-Ignite U.
We are finding it is critical to take the time to sort life out, get rid of the excess, and be free to serve God and those He has called us to help.
