Candid Imagination

Thinking about possibilities…

When our senior Thursday morning Bible Study continues, we will tackle End Times. The more I probe, the more fascinating yet confusing it gets. God no doubt was wary of giving too much precise information and no doubt is somewhat amused in how we interpret His many hints. One thing is certain: life as we know it will end some day. How and when is the big question even with a zillion (I like that word) hints.

Anyway, I began to think what our everyday society would be like with sin, evil, depravity and the devil out of commission. Think with me for a few seconds. No more mass media with sub par plots and language (noticed how this has risen to the lower common denominator?).

Salaries will equalize considerably with extremes vanishing (no taking from the rich to give to the poor, however). A lowly teacher will earn the same as the highly esteemed and overpaid (by comparison) coach. Speed limits will be observed so no patrols need hide in the bushes and common courtesy will be the norm, not an exception.

Ash trays will disappear or used to store safety pins. Marijuana, tobacco, hard liquor and other habit forming substances will vanish due to lack of interest. Students will learn; plagiarism will never be caught because it just won't occur. Auto and home insurance won't be necessary as everyone will live by the honor system.

Now, in case you are confused, I am not talking about heaven, nor about any ideal millennium possibility. I am strictly looking at what our existing society might have been like. Divorce and abortion will take a beating, fathers will father their children, mothers will smother them with love, and granny flats will become obsolete.

Our governing bodies, from bare bone local entities to our national congress, will not know what the word “partisanship” means and all people everywhere will be served. There will be no more self-serving perks, opponent bashing, or secretivism (my computer dictionary couldn't find that word). Transparency will be obvious, not oblivious.

Crossing guards for school kids will lose their jobs only to find better ones. Artificial quotas in the workplace will not even be necessary and unions will be able to use their discretionary income for noble purposes.

We could go on but this should suffice. When the Almighty gave us the universal Ten Commandments, the Beatitudes, the Christchild and the Risen Lord, He fully intended that these would govern our conduct and future. My, what a world that could have been and should have been.

If you are willing, we can use our imaginations to create wonder, and then take this virgin year and help make it more like it coulda and shoulda been. OK?
