Planning Ahead

Not planning ahead almost guarantees a senior moment or two…
Not planning ahead almost guarantees a senior moment or two. But then, even the best plans can get derailed. My most recent senior moment involves good planning with an unexpected outcome.
Years ago I penned a book, Couples in the Bible. It has long been out of print. However, missionary friends, Tom and Janice Kelly, enjoyed the book and a few years ago, they along with others felt it ought to be available in Spanish. After considerable time, energy, setbacks, and hard work, the book was translated, printed and ready to roll.
They wanted the author to be there for the inauguration which was set for a long weekend: Friday through Sunday. I flew down to Mexico City on Thursday for the grand opening. The book was released just in time for the occasion. We had a wonderful turnout with lots of autographs, hand shakes, hugs and thanks.
These people are marvelous souls, tender-hearted, loving and gracious. It was way beyond the expectation of Tom and Janice. The next day we had another fine experience with another group of interested people with more autographs, hand shakes and hugs.
One more day to go. I was scheduled to preach at the El Dorado Church followed by a presentation of the book. As we relaxed in their home on Saturday night, we received a call. Church services were canceled, schools from preschool through the university levels were canceled for one week. Athletic events (like soccer) went as scheduled without any spectators.
My hosts became concerned. They felt an awesome responsibility for my welfare as the Mexican government made serious attempts to head off the Swine flu. They insisted on finding a flight and sending me home earlier than planned. Janice finally found a flight for early the next morning and I was homeward bound.
Meanwhile, I was suffering a senior moment not knowing if planes would be flying out of Mexico, with a heavy heart for my hosts who had planned a three-day extravaganza but had to cut it short and get their guest out of harm's way. No one knew what the morrow would bring and they felt so responsible to get me out of any danger ASAP.
Ironically, upon arriving home, we soon learned of the earthquake centered only miles from where we held our first two sessions. So, what constituted my senior moment? Fear of the flu? Wondering what tomorrow might bring? Being a stranger in a foreign land? Forgoing the final session? Anxiety because my hosts were so concerned about me? For planning ahead and seeing our plans disintegrate? Maybe all of these.
Ah yes, senior moments come in all shapes and sizes. And often unexpectedly.
And still there is that nagging O you of little faith which is better theology than comfort at times.
