Social Security Perspective

Dan looks back at his own involvement and to what lies ahead&hellip

Years and years ago I started paying for social Security like many of you did. Now I am the recipient of it and it is an important factor in our daily expenses. I read recently that S.S. is a vital part of a large number of retiree's income. Those with huge savings and investments probably wouldn't have a Senior Moment without Social Security arriving every month.

However, some of our elected leaders have raided the fund apparently without any intention to repay it. But there is more. These same leaders have tried many times to utilize Social Security funds for their, not our, interest. I'd be remiss to end my twenty-year sojourn on the web without addressing this situation. It would be tragic if S.S. would be vulnerable to these invasions or omissions or efforts that have occurred.

Lets go back a few years to 2005 when the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare and look at what they have done for us (especially recipients and prospects). They stopped the privatization of Social Security. In 2008 they led the battle to stop an arbitrary 45% cap on the government's funding of Medicare. In 2011 they prevented Social Security and Medicare funds from being cut under a Balanced Budget Constitutional Amendment.

In 2013 they prevented a cut in the Social Security Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA). The following year they won the battle to boost Social Security benefits. In 2015 they protected us from security theft by supporting legislation to remove Social Security numbers from Medicare cards. In 2017 they held the line of Trumpcare which would have weakened Medicare and raised premiums. Last year 2018 they helped restore vital funding to the Social Security Administration which would help keep field offices open.

Finally. Do you remember how important COLA is? Did you know about the NCPSS (National Committee to Preserve Social Security) and others responsible for keeping S.S. alive and well? What about 2019 and beyond? The battle to preserve Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid undoubtedly will continue. Whenever you can help in any way you can, please do so, for your sake and that of your succeeding generations. Keep an eye not only on the check that arrives but also on those who keep them coming.

Isn't it a wonderful Senior Moment when old timers look after youngsters and when seniors are not forgotten? Everyone can have a Secure Senior Moment, not only aging folk.
